Oh yuck. Just what the world needs -- another mindless, soulless Rosetta Stone clone. :-(

Edit: more substantial feedback:
The website is poorly designed and unintuitive to use. There's a series of icons, and one says "language". When you click it, you get a list of languages, with the language name in the language in question. My first reaction was that this was the interface language, and when I clicked on Russian, I thought that this was confirmed, because I got a screen full of Cyrillic text. Not useful for a near-absolute beginner. The text, it turns out, was the headings of the different sections of the course. Looking at it in any of the Romance languages, I can see that -- but that's advanced stuff that no beginner is going to know.

Hi everybody! iam looking for a free language learning tool since i am not in the position to pay all that much for softwares like rosetta stone..

It might me helpful to know which language you want to learn. There are many language-specific sites out there that can help you.

Rosetta Stone should be free! It's crap!

I wouldn't use it if it were.

The best software I've seen so far is produced by The University Of Arizona in the USA and it's called Critical Language Series. It's software, but it's academic. No bells, whistles or guess what the photo is trying to tell you games!

Eurotalk isn't bad either.

Hehe i agree with you to some extent, i wouldnt call RS crap however it is overpriced for sure.. There concept is very business orientated as they can reach out to many countries with their "non-grammar" way of learning through pics and games.
I would say that if it was free in the same fashion as lingpedia it would be good.

I checked out Critical Language Series seems interesting i will try to find a demo of it :)

Read some of the reviews of RS on Amazon! Not the fake, hyped ones, but the negative ones. There is also a very damning review of the Russian RS out there somewhere online.

I can't tell what the RS pictures are trying to convey. For example, in one of the earlier units there are two cute Indian girls who look as though they are doing a song and dance act. I cam't tell whether they are dancing, singing or recreating a scene from a Bollywood film. Apparently, they are 'running' so you can keep RS for all I care. If you like it, then enjoy it. I just hope you didn't pay for it!

I have to give RS their due in one respect: their marketing is top notch! They have managed to create a name for themselves as the first stop for language learning, for anyone who isn't a language learner. They could sell fridges to Eskimos!

I can see a market for refrigeration in the arctic.

Well i have to admit it can be improved but as i said think its in a beta phase and if
they improve it i would choose lingpedia before RS that costs quite a bit. So instead
of criticizing a FREE language tool you can contribute with suggestions of other good
language learning tools that are for FREE.

Two comments:

1. You were in fact opening the door to comments about the site you appear to be
flogging. If you only wanted favourable comments, best to have specified. But it is
beyond rude to invite comments and then criticize those who provide them.

2. You folks looking to promote a website under the guise of someone who just stumbled
across it could really benefit from becoming more sophisticated in your efforts, as it
takes all the challenge out of it for us if you make it so obvious.

Apologies in the event that I am misreading this, but one day on the site, five emails,
all promoting or defending a site I have never heard of just seems a little fishy.
