Learning language online, successful? | ||

has anyone tried using the internet to learn a language? what was your experience? do you think it is a good idea? i understand that online learning is more suitable for beginners and that's fine with me. of course i'm going to buy some books but i just want to know how decent is learning a language online.

Depends what you mean by using the internet. Actually most of the things I read and listen to for several of my languages come through the internet, and there are some excellent tools like search machines, translators, grammars, dictionaries and internet TV/radio/podcasts out there - it would be silly not to use these possibilities.
I'm more sceptical about courses through the internet - those which I have seen (without following any of them) looks too much like snippets of old-fashioned classroom courses - just like the first cars which looked like horse wagons. Besides there is a risk that you just end up looking at your screen instead of being active in the language - surfing around is not in itself going to teach you a language. But in spite of this I would say that the internet is the best thing that has happened to language learning since the invention of printed books. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I don't quite agree that online learning is more suitable for beginners. Once you find the right website or podcasts you often go 'wow! how could I ever pay for something not even half as effective as the materials on this free web page?" For me it was this way with Spanishpodcast , ssl4you or audiria, to name just a few. (Of course some American learners of Spanish wil complain that it is Spanish as spoken in Spain but I'm sure there are plenty of similar sites for Mexican or Colombian varieties.
