Maybe this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find it. One of my research languages for grad school will likely be Russian, so I'd like to get started on it now. I'm looking for a textbook focused on bringing the student to a level of reading competence where he/she can comprehend academic papers, without focusing on writing, listening, or conversation. For French, there is the excellent French for Reading by Karl C. Sandburg, and for German there are two books: German for Reading Knowledge by Jannach & Korb, and German Quickly by April Wilson.

Does such a book exist for Russian?

Since I haven't studied Russian I am certainly not the best person to answer your question, but I have seen the administrator of this forum recommend Reading Modern Russian by Jules Levin. It might be worth having a look at that. It seems to be geared towards an intermediate level, but since I doubt there is a single volume that brings you from a beginner level to being able to read academic papers, it might be useful as one of a few books in your study plan.

Thanks! That looks like it may be the thing. It looks like they have it at the university library here, so I'll try to take a look at it this week.
