Every language we learn is meant to communicate with people, but it turns out we might not be the only ones in the Earth using language systems. Scientists have studied various cetaceans, and have found differences between the sounds made by whales in the different oceans. It seems, also, that these sounds have syntax.
There is current project, Speak Dolphin (www.speakdolphin.com), that is studying the sounds produced by dolphins, trying to get a meaning and looking into the chance of producing other sounds as answers.
Imagine what it would be like to communicate with animals! Definitely the ultimate dream of the language lover. And what seems like science fiction could be true in the future.

I don't know much about communicating with Whales, but I read somewhere that Dolphins are the most intelligent animals of the Earth (someone can confirm that?). I believe in the possibility of communicating with them. It would be awesome, not only for language lovers, but for everyone. It's actually possible to communicate with animals in a simple way (as trainers do), but I think that's different.
A lot of animals (perhaps them all) produce sounds, and many of them communicate with themselves. Perhaps the Dolphins are the only specie able to use a higher level of communication.
I do believe in this project, and I hope it happens. Science is awesome.

Would you consider those a separate language or a dialectal continuum?

In fact, dolphins are the second most intelligent species on the planet. White mice are
first, and humans come in a rather distant third.

You see, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than
dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all
the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But
conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than
man—for precisely the same reasons.
