Makes perfect sense to me. But, we have a lot of these quotes in martial arts.

I read it similarly to you Splog.

Since the 'best teacher' phrase comes first, and it is a slogan for an actual teacher, it invites the reader to first consider 'teacher' literally rather than metaphorically. If the slogan was "Your last mistake is your best teacher" it would be crystal clear. Also 'last mistake' is so often used idiomatically in the sense of 'final' rather than 'most recent', that that is what first jumped into my mind.

I think it's confusing within the context Splog provided. I didn't understand it until I read Jason's post. Without the back story the meaning would be clearer.

It makes sense to me, but only after reading other posters thoughts. :P

If I saw that on a poster without context, I would probably not understand.

I started to read it like tractor, then when I finished the sentence, I was all "Wait, what?". Then I reread it and it made sense. It's a bit like a garden path sentence ("Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana"). It's a bit funny in that I made a mistake in my first interpretation and then I reread it to find out that mistake is a good teacher.

Had I written it myself, I'd probably have used 'latest'.

Made sense to me on the first read - the thing you can learn the most from is your most recent mistake. Might have got it because I made a stupid error while talking to a cashier today and I'm still kicking myself. :P

My immediate reaction too, but then I got the awkwardly phrased "we learn from our mistakes".

As a topic title on the forum front page, I understood it first time.
Which isn't to say I would have understood it in context -- if I was thinking about teacher=person, I might have misinterpreted it.
