My Italian pronounciation is certainly better than my German pronounciation - however unfortunately, I do not have gift of accents so I would have to work hard. I am more than half-way through Pimsleur Short Course. Once that's finished, I will start with Beginner A. By the time Assimil actually arrives, I should have gotten quite a bit of practice.

I have managed to try out quite a variety of material in Italian learning, and here is my personal opinion about them:
I know many people recommended starting off with Michel Thomas and then moving on to Pimsleur and/or Assimil. I disagree. While I agree that Michel Thomas certainly includes valuable lessons in structure, the pronunciation (at least for the Italian lessons) is no where near as authentic as Pimsleur. [I am still waiting for Assimil to arrive, so don't know about that]
So I would prefer to work on them simultaneously. In my case, I started with Pimsleur because that's what I had first, and it's worked out well for me because I can use their pronunciation in MT lessons.
I have also tried Linguaphone, which I like as well. Again, I think simultaneous lessons work well - I can switch from one to other, rather than boring my brain with same type of lesson all day. It also helps because at Beginner's level, most of the programs cover a lot of similar ground, so I get reviews done in a slightly varied form.
Another one I have tried is Instant Immersion. I think that's good enough as a supplement to all the other ones, but I certainly wouldn't want to rely on it.
I also tried couple of units of Berlitz. That is my list favourite. It just doesn't seem as well done as others.
So over all, Pimsleur, MT and Linguaphone (and Assimil) is a combination that I am currently finding useful and I think it may just work.
PS: There is one thing about MT that irritates me. I think that the students sometimes just go on and on, and when they make mistakes, it takes so long for MT to correct them that it confuses me sometime. I am not saying that the pain is not worth the lesson, but annoying nonetheless.

Lascia stare Pimsleur e Mt, ti fanno solo perdere tempo. Vuoi sapere come ho fatto io ad imparare l'italiano? Con i Dvd! Prendi un dvd, guarda una scena alla volta con i sottotitoli, analizzala, traducila con un buon dizionario, cerca di dedurre tutta la grammatica e poi... recitala!!!! A memoria! Ripeti il processo 30 minuti al giorno, tutti i giorni, lasciandoti la domenica per ripetere quanto memorizzato durante la settimana e, te lo assicuro, in 3 mesi sarai pefettamente fluente.
Ovviamente, se vuoi centrare il risultato, dopo un mese è bene che cominci a chattare e parlare via skype.
Do you like my Italian? Without a shadow of a doubt it's a hell of a lot better than my English.
