Is the Assimil Russian course from 1951 okay to learn from? Were there any significant grammatical or spelling changes in Russian after that time? Does it contain any archaic words, like one would find the word "swell" in 1950s English?

I don't know about the spelling, but it will without doubt contain archaic words. After all the course is 50-60 years
old. But does it matter? The course will teach you decent grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. By the time you
reach anywhere near "advanced" or "native fluency", you will know what sounds old-fashioned, and therefore avoid
these words and expressions.

I'm using it right now, and there are indeed a fair number of archaic words. One that comes to mind is носильщик, "porter." I can't really imagine myself ever using that, in English or Russian. But for the most part the vocabulary is fine; a lot of the vocabulary in it is in the much more up-to-date New Penguin Russian Course.

As long as you don't rely on it as your exclusive source, the quality of an old Assimil (or indeed, pretty much any other brand) will more than make up for its slightly outmoded language. Just don't go around calling people 'товарищ' and you'll be fine.

I do indeed like it, very much so. It doesn't try to skirt around grammar, which is something I really dislike about many of the newer language course books. The New Penguin course coupled with Assimil seems like a good place to start for someone wanting to tackle the language.

Does anyone know where I can find this course? I see torrents, but wonder it they are the real deal.

They used to be in UZ, but were banned from there by request, even they were long out-of-print editions.
