I've been meaning to ask this for awhile: I've noticed that many people have high praise for the old Assimil courses. Is there something wrong with the new ones?

They are excellent all around in my opinion, I have the old German course, and the new one, They are all very similar and my favorite way to start out with a language, it's just like Russian for example, Assimil doesn't produce a "new" course for it, so we resort to the old :D

Hi,

I have "le russe sans peine" bought in 2000, and got: the 1951 and 1971 version (with audio):

The best one is from far the 1951 version, in my opinion.

The actual version has a big step to take around the 13/15th lesson: it's not progressive enough. But, it's something I noticed also with the German course. (but later in this course).

The more progressive course is the DLI course, which you can get for free.

Yes, 80 pages only for the accusativ, but after that, you'll never forget how to use it.

Hope this help,

Eric!
-----

ps: I use many sources together: assimil and other audio courses, FSI, DLI, grammar books, reader books, TV, podcasts ...

For me, it's the best way not to be bored. And every method has a different focus, so it's a good way to see more topics.
