I'm looking at programs in Russia for next summer, which will be the summer between my last year of high school and my first year of college. I've only recently started (about a month ago) learning Russian and am not too optimistic about my skills come time for me to get on the plane but do plan to study hard until then.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Any experiences to report? There appear to be many options upon first glance.

St Petersburg State University has great courses that aren't too expensive - so does the Benedict School in St Petersburg. I know there are other schools in Moscow, and Study in Russia can give you more ideas on where to stay, as well as organise your trip. They offer uni halls and families, so you can pick what you think would be best for you. However, start applying for a visa early, because it's a royal pain in the bottom, and the amount of paperwork is considerable!

Thanks for the response, Préposition. My family's been to Russia before so I'm familiar with the visa process and I'll definitely get started on that pretty soon.

Are you currently a high school senior? If you're talking about this coming summer, then it's a little too late to apply for this program, but if you're not a senior yet you should look into the NSLI for Youth scholarship next year: nsliforyouth.org. It's completely free, with an emphasis on language acquisition, and you can apply for a year, semester, or summer in any of eight or nine countries (one of which is Russia). I'm currently on the China program for a year (year between high school and college), and I know there's someone else on the board here who went to Egypt last year. It's a great program but not well publicized, so tell your friends!

I actually did apply to NSLI this year (although for the China summer program) but got rejected :( Also I am a senior right now so my opportunities for that have passed.
