USD10,000 on a couch is an obscenity. In fact, that much money spent on any one individual object is an obscenity. I can't think of anything I'd want that costs that much.
What I do need though, costs much more than that - a spacious, noise-free home. Other than this, were regular living expenses otherwise met, I'd separate some money for the time when I am ready to read this, save some for an emergency, give some it away to someone close to me who might need a hand.

I already travel 6 mo out of the year to practice/study languages. It usually costs 30-50k, and covers 4-6 countries.
So if you gave me an additional 10k, I guess I'd spend it on stuff that makes the vacation more fun. Like booze and
women.

I'd fly to Hong Kong. Well, no, I probably would use it for schooling, but if I really had 10k just to spend, I'd fly to Hong Kong.

First, I am very curious to know what sort of sofa one could purchase for 10k, although I doubt I could ever rationalize paying that much for one piece of furniture.
I'll have to give two answers to the actual question. In reality, $10 000 would be very helpful in paying for my education and that is most likely how I will spend it. That is a very practical answer but it's no fun, What if I had the money to spend on anything I wanted? Well, I just thought of 3 choices: 1. Go to Mexico for 3 months and find out just how good (or bad) my Spanish is. 2. Visit South Africa and Namibia, though the cost of a round-trip plane ticket from the Northwestern US would be around $2 000 (or more) which might mean spending only a month in each country but hopefully this would be the perfect chance to improve my Afrikaans by interacting with native speakers. 3. Spend part of the summer in Iceland traveling the Ring Road on a bicycle.

Well personally, if I had $10,000 to burn, I might well spend it on education... in a foreign country.
Degrees are a lot cheaper in places like Peru, and I always did fancy getting a masters and/or phd....

Of course we have to keep in mind that the cost of living, including furniture prices are high in Norway, but this is actually not even a flashy, or particularly beautiful sofa. It is a good quality, light grey, very average looking sofa. I would never have deared to buy something like that even if I had had the money for it, as I know that 5 minutes after we had brought it into the house we would spill ketchup or blueberry jam on it, and ruin it forever.
The thing I like with my sofa is that I can wash the covers, and if something unspeakable were to happen to it, I can just buy a new cover for 50 bucks. Hence more free money for language learning material and trips :-)

I spent a bit more than 10k USD on my year in China learning languages and martial arts. If I got 10k
more, I'd pile them up with other savings (right now I have about none, just having come back from China)
and try to think of where I want to go next. Part of me wants to go to South America, but I didn't have
enough time in HK last time, so six months in Hong Kong would be pretty sweet, as Cantonese is my
favorite language ever.
