There is a bed shop in Prague where beds cost between US$10,000 and US$20,000. I went
in to have a look (with no intention of buying one). Apparently, these are the most
comfortable beds in the world and are claimed to ensure the end of sleepless nights,
and guarantee you would wake up fully refreshed every morning.

It is certainly true that the average person spends one third of their life in bed. For
many, the same could be said of a sofa. So, why do we feel repulsed by the idea of
spending so much money on one?

I am not sure. Particularly if we compare this to the cost of a typical car, where most
of us spend only an hour or so a day.

Anyway, my own personal view on money: I used to hear that "time is money". If that is
true, I thought, then "money must be time". So, rather than buy stuff, I saved up
whenever I could, so I could buy myself lots of free time by quitting works as soon as
possible. With that free time, I focus on my hobbies all day.

I may not have a BMW to drive to work in, but the I don't need one, because I don't
have a job to drive to.

A few friends have told me that I am lazy, and that they love their job. My (now well-
rehearsed) response is: "Anybody who says they love their job is somebody who lacks
sufficiently fulfilling hobbies".

In short, when I think of a windfall of US$10,000 - my first thought would be "how many
hours of freedom would that equate to?

Prefences are subjective. Someone that spends $10,000 on a sofa may be just as appalled by the amount of time and money we spend on languages.

Yes. If I got a big windfall I'd probably stop working for a wee while and invest the time in my hobbies, i.e. study music and languages. And since I wouldn't be tied down to a location due to work I could do some travelling in Europe and spend a good bit of time in countries practising languages. So perhaps I'd split a few months between France, Italy, and Ukraine. Or alternatively take up Spanish; that amount of money would probably go quite far in South America...

I'd spend the money on the two things I love most: travel and languages. It's hard to decide though as there as so many tempting options: travel around Russia and study Russian, take Japanese classes in Japan, learn Portuguese in Brazil or move to Malaysia for a few months to learn Bahasa Melayu.

I think I can get 5 bicycle tour vacations out of that. You get to see a lot more then
the standard bus tour. Talk to locals and practice language in a more personal setting.

I've just checked and, at this particular instant, 1 GBP = 1.63613 USD.

This means that $10000 is just over £6000. I wouldn't say no to receiving that, no strings attached, but I wouldn't be able to retire, travel or do anything else along the lines that some of you are suggesting above. I'd probably be really boring and put it in the bank.

Now, if the amount offered was multiplied by 100, or maybe even 1000, then I'd have to do some serious thinking...
