Have you ever been as comfortable in a learned language vs your native tongue? It
intrigues me. I'd prefer to be able to think as effortlessly in another language as my
native one, I know that wouldn't literally happen, but how close could you get?

Why wouldn't it literally happen? Some people claim to be more comfortable in a non-native tongue; spending much more time with a non-native language than a native one can lead to that, though it doesn't always.

Really? I thought one would never be as comfortable due to the lack of the 100% natural
learning from birth. I guess that was a strange misconception.

Yes, really. It doesn't seem to be that common, but it's not vanishingly rare, either.

Thanks! That's encouraging :)

I was dreading the idea of having a headache trying to speak in so many languages.

Today, I'm more comfortable in my second AND third languages than in Spanish which is my mother tongue. I left Mexico at 10 and have been in total immersion in other languages since. While I have no problem speaking Spanish, my active vocabulary, use of slang, speed and grammar knowledge are just better in those two other languages.

Look at most early age immigrants with multilingual parents and you'll get a similar result. It is actually relatively common within that group, such as the expat community.

I feel about as comfortable in English as in Swedish, and I don't even live in an English-speaking country.

I began learning German at 28, took two years to be able to converse on any subject and due to the fact that I have practiced my profession almost solely in German I prefer to speak German rather than English. When I speak English I have to search for words which I wouldn't normally use. So it is possible for the adult learner too.
