If anyone stumbles upon this post as I just did today, I offer a couple of notes intended to clarify and not to criticize (Judith is one of my heroes, as is Serpent, who has a later comment):
(1) Later in the thread $2.99 is mentioned as the price of Judith's books, but the price has gone up to $5.99.
(2) Using Amazon's "Look Inside" feature with the guide book on French, I see a mention of French in Action. Please be aware that although watching the charming episodes is free for some of us, the course itself consists of not only the video episodes but also items definitely not free: a textbook, DVD, workbooks and study guides.

You should try Duolingo. They have a good variety of language courses for free.

I agree with the comment above, Duolingo, is one of the best free language apps. You also have
Memrise and Busuu that compete. Also, I recently came across a really good language site and app
that is called 50languages, I'd advise you to check it out!
