Vocabulary in isolation or in context?

Hi,

Which is the best way of learning new words in isolation(the word alone on a
flashcard) or in the context(in a simple sentence)?

Or is it better to follow a two steps approach: first in isolation and then in
context?

The difficulty with learning the new word in the context is that you are loosing a
bit the focus and by introducing a whole new sentence you have now to remember it
all, and it could be that another word in that sentence will prove problematic...

Ideally you should build upon the previously learned words...

I'm curious how do you do it and whether there is a best way recommended by
specialists...
