I currently have a student who needs a lot of practise doing listening comprehension
for an advanced exam of German. The way the test works, and the way we have been
practising is as follows:
We agree on a topic suitable for his level. He then asks me an open-ended question in
German about this topic and I give a long answer, just talking until he stops me. All
the while he's taking notes. He may ask for clarifications. Afterwards, he tries to
repeat every bit of information I gave, but doing so in English so that he can't repeat
phrasings without fully understanding them. Then there's another question about the
same topic, and so on.
I think it's a good test, especially for B1 level to C1 level; for C2 level I find it
hard to spontaneously use difficult enough language but could probably do so if I knew
the topic in advance (then the issue is that the student mustn't know the topic in
advance).
If any of you want to try this, I volunteer to give one short such test over Skype to
any forum member with >200 posts.
