Of course, you can say that you're happy with just knowing language A and B, but after a couple of years you might come to a point where you have learned those languages so well that you hardly make any progress any more. And then you might meet nice people who speak language C and you start to study it a bit and get excited by learning something new... et voilà. When learning languages, you have to set certain limits and goals (e.g. only learning two languages for the time being until you are fluent) in order to get anywhere, but I don't think it's possible to make long-term plans. Three years ago, I would never have thought that I would ever learn Portuguese, but then I made Brazilian friends and now I listen to Brazilian music and read novels in Portuguese.

It's important to differentiate between the desire to know and speak a language and the desire to learn one. Unless the former ignites the latter, you'll likely end up in different places.
For every person like Ari who said, "I'm in this for the learning, not the knowing" there are a handful of people who light up at the thought of speaking 5, 10, or 20 languages but whose misplaced desire will ultimately deceive them. In the case of Japanese, "it would be so cool to watch raw anime" doesn't usually get one as far as "this is complex and interesting." Me? Yeah, it'd be great to know five or six languages. I'd love to speak Korean and get off the beaten path when traveling thtere, but in actuality I'm just not that interested unless I'm planning a trip. In addition to Japanese, I only really see myself learning Italian though I reserve the right to surprise myself in the future. 1 person has voted this message useful |
