There are many members who have made hundreds, even thousands, of posts here to help other language learners. So tell us - why do you do it?

Because we like to talk about languages and language learning, and most of us don't have the opportunity to do it in our offline lives. For me, it's no deeper than that.

Because it makes me feel useful? Actually, for me the help and advice people give to other language learners is the best and most useful part of this forum. When I started studying languages seriously, nothing like this forum existed - internet was still in its infancy. If I had questions, I had to plough through grammar books or wait for my next language lesson so I could ask the teacher. HTLAL gives you almost instant access to thousands of enthusiastic "teachers".

If I can share my knowledge about any language I know with others, I feel happy about it. And although I do not post many questions myself, I learn a lot from the answers people give to questions put by others.

Because it is nice to help others, and because when I need or want an answer to the fruit of my ever curious mind, I know I will get some good answers, some funny answers, perhaps some weird answers, but usually always answers which make me think.

In Norwegian we have a saying which goes "Den største glede du kan ha, det er å gjøre andre glad" (The biggest joy imaginable, is that of making other people happy).

I do not need drugs, I can just get high on answering questions here, :-)

Because those of us who have successfully learned another language on our own, and have also benefited from advice on this forum have a duty and a responsibility to give back. Even if you have not benefited from advice here, helping others is a good thing to do. Most everyone needs help at some point. When I need help I am grateful that someone is there to offer it. It's as simple as that. What a sad, pathetic world it would be if we were all on our own.

I find that teaching is an essential part of learning. I don't really understand things
until I explain them.

So if I see a beginner with a really interesting question, and nobody answers it for a
while, I'll try to summarize my own experiences. This lets me boil an inchoate, half-
formed idea down into a nice, clean summary. And along the way, I certainly hope to "pay
forward" some the incredibly useful advice I've received here.
