Hi everyone!

I'm thinking of buying myself an ipod touch and am wondering which flashcard programs people have had the most success with.

I'd like the ability to organize cards into different decks, organize decks by language, and add my own cards/decks rather than have pre-made decks that come with the software.

I'd also love to be able to color-code words (nouns = pink, verbs = blue, etc) but I'm betting this feature is a long shot.

Apologies if this has already been asked. I tried searching without much success.

I'd recommend Flashcards Deluxe, very cheap and easy to use and I like the fact that you
can record sounds to it directly with the microphone of your iPod touch.

Here is some info about it.
The only problem you might find is colour coding which can be done but you need to input
html code which is not exactly fast!

I find it a great app, especially for the price. Anki is probably the best overall though
but costs much more.

Thanks! I'd heard of Anki but had not heard of Flashcards Deluxe. I'll look into both of them, though I definitely prefer the price of Flashcards Deluxe.

You can try Anki for free on the desktop/laptop first. It also handles color coding, and allows for multiple decks.

I would recommend creating the flashcards on a real computer and importing them into Anki there, since creating cards directly on the ipod touch is slow. Then use Anki's synchronization to upload the deck changes to the web, and download them again with the ipod touch. This also allows you to do reviews on both your ipod and your laptop and keep the two copies of the deck in sync.

Do you spend most of your day with access to a wifi hotspot? Anki offers a free mobile
service, from which you can access any deck you've made from anything with an internet
connection.

Thanks! I've just downloaded Anki for my desktop to give it a try. The color coding is what will really sell me on the program. If I end up liking it for the desktop, I'll definitely buy it for the ipod touch, despite the high price tag.

The desktop version is fantastic, I use it daily, but haven't got round to getting it
for the iPod yet. The iPod version doesn't have all the features of the desktop one but
most.

If you are looking for a program with a very good SRS, Anki is definitely best, but if
you like to make numbers of smaller decks which you can flick through at your leisure
as you would with paper flashcards, Flashcards Deluxe might be for you and it has the
benefit of linking up with Quizlet.com so you can download a large number of decks from
there.

As somebody mentioned above, the iPod/iPad version differs from the desktop version.
More specifically, it is a complete rewrite. The result is that, as much as I benefit
from using ANKI on my iPad, there are important features on the desktop version that
are completely missing. The most striking of these is that there is no card browser,
wherein you can see summaries of many cards at the same time, and search through them.
I rely on this feature quite heavily on the desktop, and it has limited my use on the
iPad.

So, do be careful when evaluating the ANKI on the desktop, and check that the features
that most interest you are also present on the version for the iPod/iPad.
