[It's National Book Week. The rules are: Grab the nearest book to you. Turn to page 56. Copy the 5th sentence. Don't mention the book. Others may try to guess which book it was.] Okay, the above is probably impossible to guess, but it is the book that was closest to me when I heard about this. Here's a book I should have had close-by, given my reading plans for the week: "Se la forma originaria non è lingua, bensì matrice universale delle lingue, ecco che ne risulta confermata la stessa mutevolezza storica dell'ebraico, ma anche la speranza che quella forma originaria possa essere ritrovata e fatta nuovamente fruttare (in modi diversi, ovviamente, per Dante e per Abulafia)." The first one I must admit I don't know. The second one is, if I remember correctly Umberto Eco, La ricerca della lingua perfetta nella cultura europea, correct? Ok, now it's my turn: "It isn't absurd, e.g., to believe that the age of science and technology is the beginning of the end for humanity; that the idea of great progress is a delusion, along with the idea that the truth will ultimately be known; that there is nothing good or desirable about scientific knowledge and that mankind, in seeking it, is falling into a trap." EDIT: I feel that I ought to add the German too because it is a bilingual book with translation on facing pages labeled 56 and 56e: "Es ist z.B. nicht unsinnig, zu glauben, daß das wissenschaftliche und technische Zeitalter der Anfang vom Ende der Menschheit ist; daß die Idee vom großen Fortschritt eine Verblendung ist, wie auch von der endlichen Erkenntnis der Wahrheit; daß an der wissenschaftlichen Errkenntnis nichts Gutes oder Wünschenswertes ist und daß die Menschheit, die nach ihr strebt, in eine Falle läuft."
