I'm not sure but the script might have come from India originally.

That's correct. It's a descendent of an ancient Khmer writing system which in turn is a descendent of Brahmi just like Devanagari, Bengali, Gujarati and other writing systems. The Lao script is also Brahmic. It's extremely similar to Thai, except that it looks more rounded.
