aaah, thanks. reading your description actually helps me to look more natural. (I already stand out when I wear my huge cowboy hat and boots -- just kidding). I usually mumble a "hallo" and make eye contact, esp. if it's on a Sunday and there's just a few out walking. I still mumble "Abend" or "Morgen" when it's an older couple.
Hee-hee. I see what you mean about the smile.

The Simpsons lied!! We don't ride Kangaroos!!! And very few of us have them as pets, albeit wildlife carers. In fact, have a go at approaching a wild kangaroo and see what happens! (They'll kick you into next week!). The same goes for Koalas - they may be cute, but they'll attack you and rip you to shreds with those claws!!
I also get annoyed when I see Australians portrayed as complete idiots. Probably the Simpsons is the biggest offender for this. I know our accent can sound funny - and I know that there have been a number of stars with very strong 'Aussie' accents, but we honestly don't all talk like that. The 'Aussie Bloke' who is portrayed all the time is pretty uncommon these days.

Stereotypes that I've heard from Russia:
1) We are hopeless nazis, we admire Hitler, we carry out SS parades, Latvia is full of nazi monuments.
2) Russians in Latvia are treated as animals, they have no rights and every Latvian's dream is to kill at least one Russian in his life.
3) We hate Russia.
Stereotypes from Western Europe:
1) Cheap beer.
2) Easy girls.
3) Poor people.
4) Our monument of freedom is a public toilet.
5) We like drunk, agressive British tourists because they are SOOO beneficial for our stick-in-the-mud economy.
