My first reaction as a moderator was to delete this thread, but I decided just to 'soften up' the title. If this develops into a flame war for and against Obama then it will be removed.

I had the same reaction as Iversen, honestly. The article does allow for healthy discussion, though I'm uncertain as to how much it can bring without turning into a political debate. I personally do not know the languages in question other than English, so I can't really do much commenting.

Interesting article. However, the author seems to be throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Just because there have been incorrect attempts to identify the antichrist, that does not invalidate the prophecy that there will be a time when the antichrist does in fact come on the scene. From my reading of the Bible, I’m not sure it will be possible to identify him prior to the rapture of the church which must come first (2 Thes 2). The tribulation period comes immediately thereafter, during which time (a literal seven year period–Dan 9:24-27) the antichrist will come on the scene and fulfill all the prophecies concerning him in a very literal way.

I can certainly see why people would identify Obama as the antichrist, he does fit many of the prophecies. Also, from the standpoint of the Christian, if Obama is the antichrist, then the rapture, our “Blessed Hope” (Titus 2:13), is right around the corner.

As for the 666 prediction (Rev 13:18) this is an interesting number in biblical numerology as 6 is the number of man in opposition to God and 3 (6 repeated 3 times) is the number of completion, thus 666 = man in complete opposition to God. It also seems to indicate that the letters of the antichrist’s name will add to 666 using gematria. However, there is no specification as to what language should be used as the base. Thus it is indeed open to speculation.

I read the Book Of Revelations with the feeling the author was on some kind of hallucinogenic substance, and while I lack competence in New Testament Greek, it has been reported that the author has a weaker command of the language than do the authors of some other New Testament books. He does not appear to be the "John" responsible for the Gospel of that name.
It is not unique as an example of apocalyptic literature from its time, but it is the only one accepted as part of the Biblical canon, not without some opposition.
Parts of Daniel and Ezekiel are apocalyptic.

I posted about this earlier, but my post got removed. Since the thread is back on this topic, I'd again like to cautiously mention that the Book of Revelations (and Daniel) have convinced millions of non-European Christians that the EU may be the foundation for the future empire of the anti-christ, which is predicted in the Bible.

From my own knowledge of the Bible I can see why they (as evangelical/fundamentalist believers) would come to that conclusion. There really are some rather interesting matches. Add to that Israels recent restoration as a nation which was also part of the prophecy.

However I don't share the view. But if the EU ever comes up with some mandate that people need to have a mark on their body to buy things (as per John) then I'll change my mind and repent for having supported the EU! And if any EU commissioners or other functionaries appear to have a "666" mark, or any other clear connection with this number, then well..... The old classic film "Omen" explains what needs to be done...

Also, for the record: I THINK the John from Revelations is a different person to the John of the Gospels.

The attempted topic for this thread was the linguistic aspects related to name translation, using Mr Obama as an example. So talking about religion isn't bringing it back on topic, it's just wasting the moderators time.

JW wrote:
There were some questions about whether the Book of John and Revelation were written by the same author based on the style of Koine Greek used in each book as well interpretation of Biblical prophecies based on Greek and Hebrew culture and history that would make for interesting discussion. Since this thread is in the “Cultural Experiences in Foreign Languages” sub-forum, I feel these are fitting topics for discussion. We have Ancient Greek and Biblical Hebrew as languages on the forum, so discussing the Bible from a linguistic and cultural standpoint surely should be valid.

Also, there certainly was no vitriol in the thread thus far, therefore, I would request that you reopen the thread. If the discussion becomes adversarial, then I would agree it should be closed.

Fair's fair. As long as you keep the discussion in lines of the translations etc etc then go nuts. I'm more than happy to lock, unlock, relock and delete this thread if needs be. But you guys need to make the supreme effort of will to keep it on topic, the two posts above this one are close to the edge.

Thom.
