I was hindered by other strangers speaking NOT Japanese with me. Through that conversation (in German and English) the percentage of Japanese I spoke during a day was visibly diminished. I'd have preferred to boost both my and my speaking partners' readiness to speak Japanese, instead of switching when "absolutely necessary". Knowing from the beginning to look out for such behaviour (as in getting caught up in other languages rather than to force on Japanese), I still didn't managed to avoid it. (Of course it also depends on what level of Japanese one and one's friends etc. are. I wouldn't have tried to discuss politics [in Japanese] with an absolute beginner obviously.)

I live by the philosophy of choosing ones friends wisely. Most of my foreign (non-japanese) friends are Asians who speak high level Japanese.

I tend to only hang around with people serious about Japanese. Too many exchange students are more interested in wasting their parents money on partying (and doing nothing else but party) for a year as opposed to serious study. I try to avoid these people and only befriend serious people.

Some people may think it is a cold attitude, but at the end of the day I have had to spend a lot of money to come here (which I had to work hard for) and I dont want to waste it.
