Indeed.
As it happens, I too have Arabic flashcards in my backpack. I also have learning materials for Latin and Turkish, which should confuse them a bit. Do I want to introduce Sharia law, restore the Roman Empire or bring back the Ottomans?
I believe people learning Russian were sometimes considered suspect during a previous phase of irrationality, in the late 1940s and 1950s.

OK guys, I'll close this thread. Interesting articles especially for those who travel with flash cards and on a schedule, but these discussions always end up in country-bashing and people pronouncing gravely that their country likes to walk softly but carry a big stick, and then it heats up some more.
