When learning to use, though not mastering, the subjunctive mood in Spanish and Italian makes me wish that English hadn't allowed it's own subjunctive mood to become almost useless.

I agree. The subjunctive mood in Spanish is wonderful!
True story: It's used so infrequently in English, that my university professor didn't expect our class to do very well with subjunctive. When she was teaching us the concept and uses, she was quite dubious about our chances of success as native English speakers, but we all did quite well.
