Some people read books from cover to cover before moving onto their next one. I tend to have at least six books on the go, jumping between them depending on my mood. I've one or two that I'll even pick up after a year. As you may guess, I tend to have the same approach to languages.

The primary driver for my language study is travel. As my next destination is Lisbon, I'm currently immersing myself in Portuguese. A couple of months ago I was in Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong, so I dabbled in Bahasa and a small bit of Cantonese. It's probably bad that I don't stick to a small subset of languages, but I hate the idea of travelling to a country and not practising their language.
