One error I keep hearing in current British English is the use of "incidence" when people
mean "incident". They're fairly close in pronunciation. "There was an incident caused by a broken drain in the centre of town" (correct) "there was an incidence caused by a....etc (incorrect) "the incidence of rabies in the UK is almost zero" (correct) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

There are a lot... My dictionary says that these are all pronouned "ji4":
儿, 异, 崺, 輀, 荑, 螔, 嶷, 簃, 鮞, 鴯, 臑, 觺, 鸃, 擬, 涯, 溰, 沶, 恞, 暆, 荋, 萓, 蔩, 跠, 詑, 耛, 鏔, 箷, 瓵, 熪, 嶬, 洍, 侕, 峏, 峓, 寲, 珆, 顊, 蛦, 鉹, 宧, 栭, 彝, 訑, 栘, 迆, 沂, 圯, 飴, 痍, 頤, 迤, 匜, 杝, 侇, 陑, 桋, 衪, 眙, 胹, 貤, 耏, 洏, 洟, 柂, 狋, 皚, 貽, 夷, 而, 迻, 酏, 唲, 眱, 袘, 羠, 聏, 袲, 詒, 兒, 台, 胰, 怡, 咦, 姨, 誼, 蛇, 儀, 宜, 移, 疑, 椸 1-word-2-pronunciations - hard to think of examples, but I usually give 長 as example. （WORD meaning of word － meaning of phrase） 長度 long － length 長子嫡孫 eldest － eldest son of eldest son (not sure of who, actually) Oh, 丈夫 husband － husband 夫復何求 ??? － What more can one ask for and 長度 -ness － longness, ie. length 度 長度 to measure － to measure length and 容易 easy － easy 易手 swap － change hands And then there are words that are pronounced differently in poetry and lyrics, or maybe to avoid bad luck or disrepect or whatnot. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |
