Moving on and on through languages, I am studying more Chinese, aided by some things I
remembered from my Korean, and speaking some of my other languages quite regularly. I
still have a dose of Swedish books left to read, so that's on my current to do list.

I know this band! Always smiled at the name. Are they still playing?

Because today is my birthday, I got some nice presents, but the most important one is
the first installment of Heisig's Remembering the Simplified Hanzi. For me as a future
Chinese learner this is what I will use when tackling the characters.
Apart from that I've been binging on Finnish music, mostly rock music in the vein of
old favourites (Sentenced, Amorphis). I've come to the realization that should I have
tried to learn Finnish in the time where that type of music spoke more to me than it
does now, I would probably have been pretty good at it. I would still like to throw
myself into Finnish one day properly, but I'm already starting to feel the limits of
so many languages and I wonder if I will ever get really good at Finnish (I might if I
work up the same love for the language that I have for Romanian or Russian for
example). When I was in Sweden I bought a phrasebook for Finnish, which means that I
have almost all major European language covered, except Polish, Czech and Italian, and
the other two major Scandinavian languages (but since I understand them in written
form and a fair amount of Norwegian in its spoken form, I'm not too fussed). (There is
also Ukrainian but that doesn't really interest me as a language).
I also put Afrikaans at basic fluency, although it's cheating, because I can read all
Afrikaans material in its original form and understand it partially due to its mutual
intelligibility with Dutch, and I have now made a note of the main differences in
Afrikaans spelling and orthography, as well as the grammar. I would still need a few
months to perfect my speaking Afrikaans, but considering its proximity, it would not
take long and the fact I can throw in Dutch as needed also helps.
