The reason being my textbook teaches that, and it's closer to home for me. But I will try
and learn the differences with Brazilian Portuguese, so that if I end up in Brazil, I'll
be able to communicate.

Get the other textbook then =D. It's Assimil you're going to use, right?

Yeah, but I am using the Dutch base Assimil (no Brazilian) and I want to learn the
European Portuguese anyway.

Tarvos, I have to say that your language learning is inspiring (though I am jealous!) You seem to learn new
languages fast, and even if they are related, it's impressive. Keep doing what you do! :)

Have a lovely trip, tarvos! You have made some very good choices for your trip, and I am sure that you will
have the time of your life :-)

I can, if you want. And I believe Expugnator could also. In spite of the "common wisdom" of this forum, it's not all that different. If you are a native speaker, that is.

I most certainly will! Most of the languages I want to learn have to do with several
things: travel, personal interest in that country, I may have friends. For example I
speak German which is not a language I use a lot (and my grammar is pretty shit) but
one of my best friends is Bavarian, so it is worth knowing (although I spoke German
before we met).

I don't learn languages particularly fast - I start speaking earlier than most people.
I simply take the beginner's hurdle faster. Once you get into complex territory I'm
just as clueless as everybody else.

Thanks!

What may these good choices have been?

By the way, I plan to practice some German during my layover at Hannover. Maybe on the
IC to Hannover I will speak some German too. Is that a good choice? ;-)

It's the same language, different orthographical rules exist among variants of other
languages as well. I adhere to the Portugal variant because I am bound to have more
contact with it (and I prefer its vowel reduction, easier to pronounce for me).

By the way, I will be keeping a travelogue in a little notebook. I may also take some
pictures (with my phone, don't expect professional quality. This is RUSSIA...)

Sunday is when I leave, August 15th is when I come back.

Once I officially start Portuguese I'll call back in here.
