Films with good TL subtitles and audio | ||

I've started this thread so that people can share good DVDs they've found that have good audio and subtitles in their target language. My preference would be for films actually in that TL. As well as mentioning the film name and language(s), please list where you got the DVD from (as DVDs in different countries have different audio and subtitles).
Unfortunately, I don't have a single good example in any of my target languages. I know of only one Hindi film, Black, which has Hindi subtitles, but they don't match the dialog very well. I have a few DVDs with French audio + subs, but they are all English movies. Another thread has made me think about asking for this, but I didn't want to hijack that thread with this question. Not a movie, but if you can get past the fact that it's a TV show about a sixteenth-
century Spanish ninja, I found that the Spanish subtitles available on the DVDs of Season 2 of 'Aguila Roja' match exactly what the characters are saying. They even spell it phonetically when the characters use a colloquial pronunciation. It was fantastic for me when I started watching native content. (The first season has no subs, so watch out). It's a fun show, epic, silly, soapy and rather sweet - the story is set around Madrid and also features royal intrigue and everyday life. Includes violence (obviously, it's about a ninja) and a bit of nudity from both the lads and lasses. Only available from Spain, but there's always Amazon or FNAC. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Unfortunately I don't really keep track of where I get dvds from. However, it's generally Amazon .fr/.ca (not that helpful I know, they generally have different versions of the same thing).
I've yet to see anything that's perfect. If the conversations are fast enough then they get shortened in the subtitles so that they can be shown long enough for people to read while keeping up with the video. Good topic, these are hard to find! A couple of French DVDs I've seen that had good
subtitles (not quite word for word but mostly accurate) were Les Intouchables and Pour Elle. I also once borrowed a DVD of Nikita that had audio in about 5 languages and subtitles in about 10, but sadly I don't remember whether French was one of these 10. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

Not a specific film, but a specific online shop, if you are into Scandinavian
films, especially Danish: http://www.dvdoo.dk I'm impressed by the range of subtitles they often have, e.g. Danish sound, with Swedish, Norwegian subtitles, plus Danish for the heard-of-hearing. I even saw one with Danish for foreign language learners. Sometimes they have English subtitles, sometimes they don't. Sometimes Finnish. I've also seen Swedish films on there with a similar deal. You have to watch out that you are going to get the sound and subtitles you want, or can live with, as it's not always predictable. There is a French DVD box set titled Sacha Guitry, L'âge d'or 1936-1938. It's an 8 disk set with 8 feature length movies and one short (I think it was about 15 or 20 minutes). All of them were written by, directed by, and star Sacha Guitry. The box is currently selling for 80 euros on amazon.fr.
I haven't watched anything close to all of it with the French "sourd et malentendante" subtitles, but from what I have looked at they appear to be about as close to exactly what was said as anything that I've seen. The only differences were some of the speed related shortenings that an earlier poster mentioned. (Plus, of course, being "sourd et malentendante" they also include subtitles for sound effects such as police whistles and car horns.) How much you enjoy the movies will probably depend on what style of humor you prefer. Guitry seems to me to be a little bit like a French Noel Coward, tending toward the style of banter and wordplay that might be described as "witty repartee". On the other hand, where Coward tends a bit more toward "drawing room comedy", Guitry is more prone to "bedroom farce". (Of course, that overgeneralizes both of them a bit.) One more thing: Relatively unusually for French DVDs of French movies, this box set also includes English subtitles on all of the movies.
