Solfrid, I hope you don't mind me asking this, but why are you excluding television news?
Is it because you want to keep the challenge focussed to the original idea of watching a 100 films and reading a 100 books.
What about documentaries then? Do they count?
Thanks. :) |

Yes, I would very much like to stick to the original idea. But documentaries do count.
I am not too happy about football either, but since I know I would hear the howling all the way from Moscow to Oslo I allow that, against my better judgement.

Really. But you are free to watch them anyway :-) I do not restrict what you do, only
what you can count for this particular challenge. |

Wow I really didn't expect this response. I must say it feels a little different now
I'm on 'the other side' (no i'm not dead, I know I know it would've made for a more
monolinguistic world without me but darnit, you have to put up with super
hyperextensive extendable rearrangeable polyglot me for sometime yet, I'm so admired
and so populaaar).
I can't believe the news in French is not counted... ok perhaps Yabla I can somewhat
understand (or can I?), yet i'm still astounded both are not allowed. I guess I was
stretching the rules myself too then. Not sure what lead me to believe I could count
it. It must have been someone who deserves a few nights in prison. Watch out! I'm
looking for you! (of course it wasn't my mistake) I'm not about to go back and delete
my posts on twitter tho, can't be **** doing that. Anywayz I guess I'll be dropping
down the leaderboard some more as I watch my French news and utilize other French
visual video material... that's not counted (raises voice a tad)!!! pffft *storms off
in a childish huff* Just so you know i'm cyring here, can't you succumb to my emotional
manipulation, just this once? for... for... me? *looks up through tears of despair
hoping for a positive response*

Restating the Rules? Hope Solfrid is OK with this summary.
OK so as I understand it, and having looked back through the various threads, the rules seem to be very simple and broke down like this.
Film = 90 minutes of visual and audio input with/without subtitles. With a bias toward fiction.
Exceptions granted:
-- Audio books
-- Television (bias toward fiction, but football/soccer granted exception during world cup and because of continuous commentary)
-- Podcasts (bias toward academic/factual programs. or dialogue)
Books = 50 pages (1 pages equals 250-350 words). There didn't seem to be any exceptions; all reading counted, but you have to calculate the number of words in an document and determine the page count as above.
-- Manga count as 1/4, aka 4 pages of manga = 1 page of a book.
Miscellaneous Rules
You can't double-dip! This means that watching a film in TL with TL subtitles doesn't count for both reading and film. You have to pick one. Listening to audio book while reading counts for either reading or film, you can't have both.
So the rules seem fairly straightforward. Don't think I've missed anything out. There is a ton of discussion about how the bot works, but the rules for the challenge are simple enough. |

Thank you, that seems to sum it up nicely, and simple was the whole idea :-)

So Solfrid, perhaps an obvious question... why isn't the news or Yabla allowed? If we're
going to be that strict then shouldn't there be very little other exceptions if not none?
I mean the news is some pretty decent watching material, is it not?

I think I can understand why Yabla isn't allowed, because each segment is rather short. I have been tempted to watch funny cat videos in French (seriously), but I guess for the same reasons it shouldn't count.
Still, I for one would love it if we could allow video news, even if we don't allow audio news. It combines the visual element with narrative speech, as well as having dialogues (interviews, etc). Still, I promise I won't fuss if it's not allowed.
Here's something to cheer us up:
