I suggested this challange because I did something like it with Amelie, and it was good to see my comprehension grow, and be able to enjoy a film without subtitles. Like you, there were times when I knew exactly what they were saying, but they were still talking too fast for me to actually "process" their words. Understanding fast language just takes a lot of time and practice.

My difficulty is finding a DVD I haven't watched yet, but which I'm sure I want to watch at least 3 times. I tried Camera Cafe, but I don't think I'll continue with it right now. It involves conversations in front of a coffee machine at an office, and so should be great for practicing listening to conversations. However, they speak fast, they use a lot of slang and so many contractions, and there is very little action to put the language in context. I watched about a half hour, struggled, and then read the transcripts for the first three episodes and gave up. Even on paper, the way they use language is just beyond me. What this tells me is that it is just too soon for me, so I'll try this series later (maybe a challenge for the last couple months of the SC).

So I'm still left searching for a DVD to use for this challenge. I think I'll have to do it with one I've watched before, so probably Le Petit Nicolas.

If you wanted to watch a series, and you have Netflix then I would recommend Engrenages (Spirals). You can turn sub-titles on and off in Netflix, although they don't seem to have French subtitles, only English. They also have The Returned which is a French series about what would happen if people returned from the dead. Not zombies, just people who came back not knowing they'd been killed.

Amazon have both of those on DVD and also Maison Close and Braquo but again the subtitles only seem to be in English. Although you might be able to download some French sub-titles.

A quick scan of some of the entries under films shows 8066 minutes and 2847 minutes and
1029 minutes. I assume most of those are for series that were watched before September
that were logged later on. September to November seems to be filled with other entries
that are of a combined daily length that they could have been completed on the days
logged.

Like @gbod, I'd tend to give him or her the benefit of the doubt.

Also, glad I'm not the only one having trouble finding a movie that is worth watching three times in the same month. I figured I'd just check out various movies and sooner or later there will be something :)

Thanks for the heads up. I've just ordered season 1 of Braquo, and I'm hesitating about Maison Close. As for the series on Netflix, I've already watched all of Engrenages, and I saw most of The Returned when it was on TV. I was actually underwhelmed by The Returned, and just found a review which captured my feelings pretty closely:

As for subtitles, I prefer English subtitles at my level, but a French transcript is helpful. It seems to me the best French transcripts are for non-French shows, so now I'm considering buying Scrubs from amazon.fr.

As for the challenge, I watched Petit Nicolas yesterday without any subs. Sometime this week I'll watch it again with subs.

EDIT: having ordered series 1 of Braquo, I've found what look like excellent French transcripts on hypnoweb:

I've just made an Anki subs2srs for Hero Corp, and it looks like you've just giving me my next subs2srs for french. Now I just need Italian & Mandarin.

@Jeffers I am planning on using Braquo for the November challenge and have already had
my first bout without subtitles. I have created a parallel word document using two
subtitle files that I found (only for the first episode, Max). I've uploaded it if
you're interested. Just scroll down and choose "Download This File", not the advert
above it. Please note, the file is deleted after 30 days of no activity.

You guys are nicer than me. When someone comes in and makes extraordinary claims I
want to see them backed up.   There was some creativity last challenge (so, Serpent,
I'm not sure why the "ugh" - I checked things pretty carefully before I said anything
in public) - but even if the current guy is back-logging stuff it comes out to 2.5
movies and 2 books in Japanese per day since May 1.   And while I realize it's
all anime and porn, that's still an awful lot.

2.5 movies and 2 books a day, every single day does indeed sound like a lot, so perhaps the one who has
posted that could tell us how he/she has achieved that? If you can pull that off, it is worth sharing the
methods.

I do not see any wrong in asking. Once at a 6wc I clocked 17 hours of activities in 24 hours, which was a
result of a particularly ghastly holiday where I tried to mentally escape as much as possible and a sleepless
night. Someone asked me about it, and I explained. End of story. (I ended the holiday with the mother of all
migraines because of all the studying, but that is another story).
