Arabic words from Pimsleur | ||

There are a couple phrases from Pimsleur 1 (Egyptian) that I can't find in any
dictionary. I try and keep a vocabulary sheet, and I'd like to have the correct spelling! Following are the phrases I can't find, along with my best attempts at spelling them. friends. sounds like a7abb or a7add. All I can find in the dictionary are variations on habibi and sadeeq. I think so / I believe so. Sounds like beit hiyatla. Pimsleur doesn't break this down into component parts. straight ahead. I'm pretty sure it's 3ala il-tul, but I can't find the correct spelling of "tul" in proper Arabic script. really?. Something like bigad? too bad. hozara or 7ozara what does this mean?. yeni e dah?. I get the "e dah" but am lost with the "yeni." one moment. lahza - I hope my arabish isn't too off. I write down the words after listening to the lesson, and so there's a lot of room for error here. I like Pimsleur, but this lack of written material is a real pain with a language like Arabic. I need to see the written word to make out some of the more exotic sounds and letters. My guesses are:
Most likely أصحاب (the plural of صاحب).

I should've gotten 2as7ab - I was familiar with sa7ib, but didn't make the connection with the plural form. (and I can't do proper Arabic on my tablet, so I'll use Arab chat for now) The context.for the others is: beit hiyatlal il mahalaat ma2fula - I think the stores are closed. bigad? - Really? Sa7ib means friend? I thought it was "master, lord", or did the hindi change the meaning
when they borrowed it? As for bigad - if it's colloquial Egyptian (and they borrow a lot of words from other languages), maybe it's a corruption of "by God" or something? Just an off thought... P.S. In MSA, صاحب, is indeed mostly used for owner, proprietor etc. but in many dialects it can also mean mate, buddy etc.
"bigad" is most likely the Egyptian equivalent of MSA بجدِ [bi-jiddin] / من جد [min jiddin] = earnestly, seriously. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||||||||||||||

I finally found بجـَدّ in the dictionary - you were spot on; it's standard MSA with an
Egyptian pronunciation. I'm still stumped on "I think so." It only comes up a few times. Best I can get on re- listening is beyit hayatli" or "bithayatli," but nothing in the dictionary even comes close. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||||||||||||||

bithay2ali, also mithay2ali (both equally correct; the dictionary uses the mi-form) بيتهيألي The rough translation is "it seems to me" ... but the grammar is a bit beyond me, so I'll think of this as a set phrase rather than try to deconstruct it now. With this, I've finished my vocab sheets for Michel Thomas Foundation and Pimsleur I. I'll cross post this at the Arab study group: KanewaiArabic Does anyone know how to make the Arabic font larger in HTLAL? My eyes aren't good enough to make out all those tiny dots.
