I'm looking for easy Greek audio material, preferably podcasts or news items of some sort
with Greek transcripts (so that I can read along at the same time). The GLOSS lessons are
too difficult for me at this point so I would like recommendations on easier material.

Have you tried Greekpod101.com?
I am not sure if the Greek series are as good as other pod101's series though.
Another resource with audio you may take a look is in the following page:
http://www.hau.gr/?i=learning.en.podcasts-in-greek
It contains 81 lessons. Hopefully it is modern Greek lessons.

MarcoDiAngelo recently added the following LINK to Greek Audio Books on the separate discussion thread List of Free, Legal Audio Books. While I suspect that most of the material will be somewhat advanced, I suggest that you save the link for future use.

The podcasts from Hellenic American Union were the most enjoyable for me.
