This reminds me of a science fiction story where someone became telepathic & had a hard time because everyone thought such bad thoughts...

At a food court in New Jersey a women working at the chinese take out gave me a dirty look and told me in mandarin she f'ed my mother. I smiled and told her I f'd her father, thank you, and I would be back. She was stunned.

Usually I hear people talking (nice things) about my 2 year old son. I always say thank you in mandarin and enjoy the startled looks. Sometimes I ask them if they have any children or other small talk.

What?! That's not something you hear everyday. I would have asked her
what position..

What did she say? "我搞你妈"

I heard 搞 used that way in a film - it would literally translates to something like 'I did your mum' - but it wasn't a mainland chinese film, so I always wondered if it was a widespread usage.

Guess I don't have enough foul-mouthed chinese friends! :(

Now I know many more adjectives and action verbs and could have a more clever response then substituting father for mother. If I only knew then what I know now. Sigh.

The thing is, 搞, 干,作 all mean 'to do' and 上 (as a verb) just means 'to go up'. So they're not really swearwords in the same way as f**k... or 王八蛋 (may have the chars wrong - found 龟头 while searching for turtle though :P). I called someone a 王八蛋 (= bastard) as a joke, with a group of acquaintances standing nearby, and the all turned round looking shocked. So I won't be doing that again!

Here's an alternative chinese dictionary. Unless it's incomplete, Chinese really doesn't have that many swearwords...
