Yesterday I was at work (I work in a big (food) supermarket on Checkouts) and this French couple got into my queue, and when I came to serve them I said "hello, how are you?" and they replied "fine thanks" and then the girl turned to her husband and said "bah il est un peu feminin!" [well he's a bit feminine!] and I didn't say anything incase they decided to say anything else about me, but turns out they didn't so I wish I'd have said "oui je sais :)" [yeah I know :)]!!!!! The look on their face would've been priceless! Ah well :P

I haven't anything happen to me personally. However, my great-uncle was a British army interpreter during World War II, and was near native fluent in French. Maybe 10 years after the war him and some of our family members were driving in Europe and there was an accident with some French speakers. They drove to the garage together, and my great-uncle stayed quiet, until he overheard them saying in French that they were going to blame my family. At that point, my great-uncle let them know he spoke French, and their plan failed ;)

I'm not a native speaker either, but I don't see a problem with "oui, je sais".

My brother's girlfriend is from Argentina so she speaks Spanish fluently but is from European stock. She has had quite a few experiences like this.
One time we were in a fast food restaurant and she ordered fries, and she saw that some fresh ones were coming out right then. She requested that she get the fresh ones. When they called our number and we were picking up our trays, one employee said to the other one something like "haha I totally gave her the stale fries".

I'm bumping this thread because it gave me a good laugh. Anyway, my story is that I was at work and just ringing at the registers. I'm a pretty frail guy at 16 years old, and these two dark-skinned girls come up speaking very, very rapid Spanish. Little did they know I was quite conversant in Spanish, and familiar with Latin American slang. One of the girls said "Mira esta pinche pinocha" and I knew, right away, what she said. I smiled like the dumb gringo I am, but couldn't say anything witty back because I knew I'd get fired. Ah well. At least I bulked up, recently. Needless to say, I receive more endearing comments from the opposite gender. ^_^

Funny tread!
My father lived in Singapore for a while and had previously studied some (very little) mandarin. He was on a
business meeting and one of the Chinese said something about the damn foreigners in mandarin. Dad didn't really
understand but he caught some words and in the end of the meeting he said goodbye in mandarin. They were
really embarrassed and they couldn't be sure he wasn't quite fluent :)
