Sorry if this is a stupid question. Is there a keyboard setting built into Windows that allows someone to type Esperanto characters, or is an external program the only way to do it?

Not in Windows, only in Mac OS X. However, you can download a tiny program called "Ek" that will automatically convert X-method or H-method to real Esperanto characters as you type them.

Yes, Ek is a very nice little program if you have to use windows. It sits in
the system tray (the little area near the clock on the taskbar) and you can
turn it on or off with a click of the mouse. It also has the advantage of being
free.

Thanks... Ek seems like it will work. However, since I haven't started studying Esperanto yet, I can't use the program (i.e. I can't read Esperanto). It's a shame that there is no Esperanto keyboard preset in Windows, or something like the United States International keyboard to type these characters.

I made an Esperanto keyboard layout a few months ago. It's pretty easy to make one yourself. There's a free download called the "Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator", and it's not too hard to figure out. You can make it work just like the US International keyboard layout, too.
