That's my ex mother-in-law's favourite place! What she loves most are the exuberant waiters... (really, not making this up)
Now, she speaks Italian quite well and would understand if someone would speak bad of her. But she has no problem criticizing the food and they still love her.

I could technically "spy" on people if I overhead a conversation of theirs in German, but unfortunately I live in an area where an occasion like that would be exceedingly rare.

My hometown is not a tourist spot just like Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Foz do Iguazu.....by the time I lived there it was common to meet backpackers hanging around and talking to them in English....most people in certain places just overheard our chat and there were cases that some thought we were ordinary locals speaking English in order to show off.
