SOS in all languages and scripts?

Amid all the shocking videos and images from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan is this photo of an SOS sign.

We hear about SOS being a universal sign for life-threatening emergencies but this is the first time I have seen it in a situation where the local language uses mainly a scripted non-Latin alphabet. It makes sense that SOS be universal. Is it indeed 'SOS' in every language, regardless of scripts and characters?
