Anyone have any idea how many Italian speakers are in the world? According to Mango,
there are 70 million first language speakers and 125 million second language speakers.
Does this seem right? Other estimates I've seen have always been much lower. If what
Mango says is true, then I had no idea that Italian was such a widely spoken language. |

Italian is widely taught in many schools around the world, but rarely as the first foreign language; in fact, Italian generally is the fourth or fifth most taught foreign language in the world.
In the United States, Italian is the fifth most taught foreign language after Spanish, French, German, and American Sign Language, respectively.
Throughout the world, Italian is the fifth most taught foreign language, after English, Spanish, French, and German.

Croatia needs to be added to that list, since it has an Italian-speaking region (Trieste).

It surprises me to know sign language ranks ahead of Italian in the US. What's the status of Italian throughout Europe? Would American sign language be universally intelligible to all hearing impaired people around the world?

In the United States, Italian is the fourth most taught "talked" language
Statistics say that American sign language is the fourth taught language ( in Usa there are 2 millions of deaf and dumb + their parents, relatives, friends etc)
Although the United Kingdom and the United States share English as a spoken and written language, British Sign Language (BSL) is quite different from ASL, and the two sign languages are not mutually intelligible.
Every country has its own sign language.
Going back to Italian language you can find a lot of radios and newspapers in Italian language in almost every country where there is an Italian community .Just have look in these links....
http://www.cittadinocanadese.com in Canada
http://www.americaoggi.info in New York Usa
http://italianmedia.com.au/w3 In Australia
then you can find in Argentina, Brasil , South Africa etc etc.

The Italian-speaking region Captain Haddock is referring to used to be part of Trieste's province. Is is now in Croatia. The city of Trieste is in Italy and it has a much smaller province now. Alongside Italian, local dialects/languages originating from ancient Venetian are usually spoken by people in those areas.

Italian is also quite useful along the Albanian coast because of the ferry connections to Vlorë and Durrës
