Oh, I'm so sorry for you guys, being a native speaker. Personally I wouldn't learn Russian under death penalty, it's
so damn hard.
Let me tell you one thing: natives are often utterly incompetent in terms of grammar. After 10 years of school they
tend to make many stupid errors. So don't fret, Russian is as hard for natives as for students :)
And I wanted to make a little remark. Hard though Russian may be, it has only THREE tenses. Not SIXTEEN like
English, but just three.

I just laughed. Where did you find those 16 tenses from? Can you count them for me please? English has just 2 past tenses with very few irregular verbs like go-went-gone or see-saw-seen. The number of these irregular verbs is very limited. The other tenses are just PATTERNS! I will go, I have gone, I had gone, I go, I am going… These tenses have zero difficulty. You have to memorize nothing.

Oh well, but they are taught as 16 distinct tenses (like here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/15803659/16-
tenses-in-English ).
We've spent an enormous amount of time studying when to use them, what the nuances are, what they actually
mean. Sequence of tenses was a nightmare :)
I remember having an advanced grammar book 300 pages thick dedicated exclusively to tenses.

This is both encouraging and demoralizing! I have to say I find Russian much harder than German, or any other language I have tried, including Mandarin and Japanese. Yes of course the writing systems of both Mandarin and Japanese are ridiculously complex, but their grammars are not.

Don't be sorry for us. If you liked mountain climbing, would it bring you any joy to be taken to Mount Everest in a helikopter? The more you fight for something, the more you appreciate it. And I can assure that I really, really appreciate Russian. :)

Russian has 5 tenses ;)
ходить - to go (from one point to another)
я хожу - regular activity as in Eng. present simple
я буду ходить - regular act. in the future
я ходил - regular act. in the past
я сходил - completed action in the past (I was there and came back)
я схожу - action in the future (this action won't be repeated, the speaker is sure that he will go there).
I think that learning any language is a hard job, even if the language seems to be easy. The hardest thing is not grammar or vocabulary, the biggest problem is to learn "thinking" in this language...I've been learning English since school and I can't say that I know this language - I know it to some extent, but still I meet many new words etc. Learning is never ending process :)
From my experience Russian is not the most complicated among Slavic family, I would say Polish is hell, I felt that it was more complicated though my look on it was very superficial.
I tried to learn Turkish, Finnish, Arabic - well everything is possible, you just need time and motivation. This applies to every language and to Russian of course. In addition Russian people don't expect anyone speaking their native language, so all of you will surprise someone one day :)

I believe it's actually 3 tenses (past, present and future), 2 aspects (perfective and imperfective), and two moods (subjunctive and imperative), and I think that's it for Russian verbs.

I've found the cases, perfective/imperfective, and the verb conjugations quit easy, although there are quite a bit of irregularities in the conjugations. Now what's giving me a bit of trouble is vocabulary, multidirectional/unidirectional, and mobile stress. Directional issues may be resolved soon, but vocabulary and stress would continue to be difficult probably.
