Is it possible to learn Spanish after studying Catalan (or vice versa) without confusing the two? Is it an easier or more difficult goal, than say Spanish and Portuguese or Spanish and Italian? Does it make any difference if you're living outside of Catalonia/Valencia?

Of course it's possible. I already knew both Spanish and Italian when I took on Catalan, so I'm probably not impartial. But Catalan was easy enough to pick up after having learned those two. There are certain grammar points that are different enough from Spanish that you shouldn't get them mixed up, provided one of the languages is already at an advanced enough level (meaning at least a high-intermediate level, in my opinion).
