I have been studying Japanese for about 8 months and, like many people, I have come across one problem: vocabulary. I understand the grammar, kana, and many kanji, but ijust can't seem to remember vocabulary. Japanese is my first intense foreign language, so i was hoping someone knew some good techniques for building vocabulary.

My own methods include two websites in particular, smartfm and readthekanji.com. Both has been of tremendous
value to me, especially in regard to tackling the vast amount of vocabulary that japanese has to offer.

I recommend using rikai-chan to read stuff that interests you on the internet. That
should definitely improve your vocabulary.

I have kind of a weird method for learning Japanese vocab that you could give a try. It works pretty well for me.

Try to "katakana-ise" native Japanese words and see if they sound like a word or words in English. An example would be the word "kuraberu" which means to compare. If you think of this as a Japanese attempt at an English word, it sounds like it might mean "club L". Then you just have to vividly imagine a nightclub with a massive neon "L" on the front and think of everyone saying "nothing compares to club 'L'/ none of the other clubs are any good by comparison!".

Some times I've run into sound combinations that are not in English words, and if these sounds are common in Japanese and thus are causing a problem for me using my method I usually give these combinations a specific meaning. The weirder/ more surreal the meaning the better, as you're not likely to accidentally think that those sounds ACTUALLY mean those things, and you have more memorable images for making mnemonics. For example, every time I see the sound "hyou" in a Japanese word I make it mean "Santa Claus". So I remember the word for "iceberg" because where Santa lives they have Icebergs instead of mountains, and they call them Ice mountains - "Hyouzan" in the word for "Iceberg" (the "zan" at the end means mountain, which shouldn't be too hard to remember if you've ever heard someone refer to Mt.Fuji as "Fujisan", also, the kanji or it means "Ice mountain"). Sorry for the long-winded reply, hope it helps.
