	Is there any harm or trouble if you start studying modern greek by using learning materials in the polytonic orthography, the old one (books printed before 1982, I suppose...)? 1 person has voted this message useful

	There's no harm in the sense that in general it's very easy to go from the polytonic system to the monotonic one. But it might be trouble if you learn to write in the polytonic system, since you'll waste a lot of time learning all sorts of rules and learning which words have which breathing and so on, all of which aren't necessary for Modern Greek. The language should be the same, unless the book teaches pure Katharevousa, so it's probably easiest just to ignore all the diacritics, and just remember which syllable is accented. 1 person has voted this message useful

	Learning the old diacritics is great if you want to flex your brain cells or if you want to become a scholar. I spent very long hours in primary school trying to memorize which one fits where (there were even mnemonic poems for this), and suddenly everything was swept away! To speak more seriously, the whole matter is about language aesthetics, but at the same time it is an open, gravely cultural-political issue. 1 person has voted this message useful
