You sound like a kid with a good head on his shoulders that any parent would be proud
of. I wish I'd had as much sense and ambition when I was 18. My interests in
languages really didn't blossom until right after I graduated from college (this
spring), and now I am really wishing I still had access to my university library.

If you're graduating in 2010 then you haven't got much more time before you're free to
go wild. Like others have said, keep the foreign languages private for now. Study and
watch your L2 media in your room. Refrain from sharing your language progress with
your mom. I know it must be crushing to be denied encouragement and support from your
own parents, but you've only got to fight for peace in your house and sanity in your
head for a few more months. Within a few years I bet your mom will be very proud of
her son's accomplishments.

Yes, I understand now :)

It's almost like one of those "Hey mom! Look what I did today!"

except I can't tell her :( lol

Your parents are both engineers. Hmm. I'm surprised they don't recognize and appreciate your academic pursuits.

Anyway, like I said, it sounds like you're on the right path anyway.

As the daughter of an engineer, my conclusion was quite the opposite. Many engineers have very peculiar opinions about the kinds of academic pursuits they consider valuable.

Maybe your mum just regrets losing Spanish in her own life and is taking it out on you, or never saw the benefit of it and therefore considers it a waste. Who knows.

Either way, I think you might need to prove the usefulness of language learning to get them on your side, if that matters to you. That might be hard to do though. Maybe if you could travel somewhere together so they could see your ninja skills then that might win them over. But ultimately it's your life, and if your parents don't approve of an additional hobby that's not harming anyone, that's not really your problem.

Mmh I have a totally different case,
my parents support me a lot when it comes to learning languages and will buy me books so I can study. But I'm personally a bit shy/ashamed when it comes to telling I study a language or that I'm interested in. And when I mention it, I never say on what level I am. Although I can read Japanese fairly (more than just basics) and understand some spoken japanese as well I still refrain to say I'm even much further than just a beginner as I'm not fluent. It surprises me always when there are people out there who claim they're fluent, but they haven't even surpassed me.

My cousins' parents used to pay for any book their kids bought in a foreign language as a way of encouraging their language learning. But they were difficult in other respects, so perhaps on the whole you might still be better off with your folks than they were!

I just plan on pursuing all of my target languages to AT LEAST a basic fluency. I don't care who gets in my way or what they tell me I can't do. :)

As far as I'm concerned, the more languages I know, the more friends I can make. :P

Thanks again for all of the support, I love this forum :)
