I would love to help younger kids speak Spanish:P
Rina,
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania :D
move now.
I went to the city today on a field trip... I passed a man speaking portuguese on the phone with a friend. I LOVED IT. I quietly listened in, trying to understand what he was talking about. I got about 60% of it :D I was a pretty far distance from an earshot too, so I was very proud :)
It's a beautiful language really.

Wow...it just warms my heart to see how well educated and historically informed that brainiac classmate of yours is. :P I was going to make a sarcastic comment about how well the educational system is working out for your classmate, but I suspect that level of ignorance is parental in origin.

I find it fascinating how in some people, ignorance isn't just lack of knowledge, it actually has a substance of its own...

Why wouldn't you find some serious studies about the relationship between language learning and job prospects? There must be 1001 different articles in dry, highbrow magazines for engineers about how foreign languages increase average income. If you could find a few of those articles they might make a convincing argument for your parents. Guys, let's give this young man some help and find him some articles!

I know the feeling, my parents always complain when they see how much I spend on Spanish and russian books. They sit and get mad, but I just reply, "THIS is really your fault, If you had made me bilingual I wouldn't have to do this!"

Datsunking, as you can see in this thread
<<German, Italian, Russian and Chinese speakers average a 4% wage premium, twice as much as Spanish ...>>
Go tell your mum that.

I don't know your family situation, but it sounds like your Mom is unreasonable in her criticism. Maybe something else is bothering her, and she's taking it out on you in this way, or perhaps she feels uncomfortable to see you growing apart from her with your own interests. At any rate, you have the right to pursue your own way in life, and you sound really determined to do so. It will pass, although it's difficult now.
In the tutoring work I have done, most of the problems I've had were with parents, not students! So many times, the parents wanted one thing for the kid, but the kid just needed some freedom to grow and learn. You'll have much more of that soon in college, so be patient. It's a real advantage to start your university work with a clear idea of what you want to study and a real passion for it!
You could point out to your parents that the demand for multilingual workers is increasing due to globalization. A common combination at the university I attended was Foreign Language + International Business and Marketing. But language skills are always an asset. I have been asked about foreign language skills in every job interview I have had, without exception. Employers are really looking for this ability, so it's practical to study languages. Over time, your parents might come to realize that.
There will always be people in your life who are critical of your choices. Stay focused, and prove them wrong!
