"Leña pal monte no se carga!!!!!" Haha I love that song too! I first found it on Yabla, a Spanish learning site kind of like LingQ in that it provides the media with automatic subtitles and definitions for everything (but you have to pay, so I gave it up after two months :(. Maybe when I start working this spring semester I'll pick it back up.) But anyhow, buen trabajo and don't feel frustrated with Russian. After all, how long did it take us to master English? We'll get there, don't worry.

I did a few more chapters of Spanish Grammar and workbook pages that come with it. I spent more time listening to some music and reviewing flashcards. Today I just finished the first one hundred notecards and now I need to spend a few hours organizing my thousand notecards and finish writing out my russian ones.
For Russian, I finished another lesson in Berlitz Russian. So far I am fairly surprised by how much I enjoy the book and recordings. Each lesson includes some new vocabulary, a brief grammar lesson and some workbook pages. But even though I study a different set of words than the ones the book recomends to learn, I haven't come across too many problems keeping up with their vocab. I finished a few more pages of workbook work in 10 minutes of Russian. As an aside, I was learning about Russian names when I started reading Brothers Karamozov yesterday and some of the pecularalities of book suddenly made sense (I tried reading the book years ago but stopped because I was confused). Before I never understood why Doystoyevsky would refer to who I thought was two different people: he would talk about how Dmitri was the first born of the family and then say Mitya was the first born of the family a sentence later. It wasn't until I read that russians have nicknames for many proper names that it occured to me Doystoyevsky would use two different names for the same person without ever saying that he using nicknames. I know that's kinda boring and seems trite to put in this log, but I just love when a lesson suddenly has a practical use. And Sprachjunge I was refering to Quabazza, sorry for hijacking your log. I haven't logged results in a few days because there isn't much to log. I've been working on essays for genetics and philosophy so my progress has been held up. However, I was given part of class off so I spent the time going over three more chapters in my Spanish grammar book while listening to some Russian. Until next time.

I just finished most of my essays today, so I'm trying to make up for my disrupted work schedule. I did several more chapters of Spanish grammar, and I worked on my berlitz russian. I read a few russian dialogues and listened to music.

Today's report doesn't have good news. I spent the last few days making notecards. Then I tried to organize them, but not only is it extremely difficult to organize 1000 notecards but it also takes forever. I eventually gave up and instead I'm chalking it up as wasted time, but a good learning experience.
However, I was able to salvage something to put in the report. While I was sitting in the car, I found a Spanish radio station based in chicago. I don't know how many people will be able to listen to them, but here a link to their site: http://www.univision.com/content/channel.jhtml?chid=9627&sch id=9828 It lists lots of Spanish songs that they're playing. The site is at least providing some up to date songs to listen to. As to Berlitz v. other programs, I can't speak for Michael Thomas, but Pimsleur I didn't like. I felt like I was learning a lot faster using pimsleur, but I found I wasn't able to just copy what I was hearing, that I had to see the words written down to be able to correctly pronounce them. But I would definitely use pimsleur in combination with other programs. 1 person has voted this message useful |
