You seem to be getting along well. Don't worry about not learning very quickly, on the one hand you're not clocking in as many hours as some others, but in the long run it'll come to fruition. 10 hours a month in each language= 120 by the end of the month, and I'm sure that in sheer number of hours they'll be more efficient than my 5 hours in a day, then nothing for a week and repeat the process. Anyway, it's nice to see you keep such a regular log, congratulations!

Thanks Joanthemaid, I am hoping that being consistant will make up for my severe lack of practice (in comparison to your incredible pace). I'd be happy studying for an hour and half a day; at least that's my goal.
Spanish- I've been working on my reading and listening. I have a book, The Secret, in both Spanish and English with Spanish audio, so I listen to the audiotape as I read the Spanish book. THen I see how much I understood and then I read the English version to see how close I was. I finished chapter 1. I've also listened to some music, and I finally checked out Aguila Roja and it was so cool. I am definitely making it a part of my studying. Russian- I read an overview of Russian grammar just to get an idea of what happening with the grammar, and then I decided I don't like reading russian grammar right off the bat because the grammar doesn't stick really well if I don't know enough vocabulary. I'm going to use Berlitz until August and then I'm going to use my grammar workbooks. Catalan- I worked on dialogues from the teach yourself series. español- 27 horas Русский язык- 21.5 hours Català- 3.5 hours 1 person has voted this message useful | |

El Secreto is an interesting read, but not that fun.... It's about how if you imagine something it will happen. Example, if I believe I will be rich, events will suddenly happen that will make me rich. It's an interesting concept, but I don't really believe it. However, Look at the people on this forum: We're doing TAC because we imagined that we could learn languages by studying for a year and so far we have.
I also found another book, Rayuela, which is much more interesting to read. It has a modernist feel to it and it's exactly the kind of literature that I am interested in (and it's by an argentinian author!). You're supposed to read it skipping chapters in this big unending loop. I've only started the book but so far the main character is this argentinian guy whose liveing in Paris. i'll say more later. I've been very busy as some of my school clubs wind down, so my study schedule has been eratic and haphhazard. I hope to be more consistant starting next week. Also, my reading skills in Spanish have become much better, so I am going to start writing part of my logs in Spanish and hopefully in Russian soon. Sorry, I haven't posted in a week. I haven't done much work because i went to Springfield for a few days as part of a club. We pretend to be politicians by making up bills to get passed by the legislature to get an idea of how american politics work. It was an interesting experience. I was surprised when a British girl made a bill mandating foreign language learning from Kindergarden- High School. It passed with almost everyone supporting it. I like to think that this means Americans aren't as dedicated to monolingualism as they used to be.
As to the work I did, I read more articles in Spanish. I've been following that story about the French commisioner of Police being killed in a terrorist attack. i can't believe that it's not in any american newspapers. I'll post tommorrow. My summer vacation just started and I'm in Florida. So I'm happy that I'll have the time to make up my
studying. Unfortunately, I have to change my lesson plans: 1. I'm going to stop learning Catalan right now, three languages to learn at once is simply too much. 2. I'm actually going to study Hungarian for the next three months. This isn't wonderlust, I've been offered to go to Budapest for a few weeks in summer, so I want to at least learn the basics by then. After my trip I'll probably stop. 3. I'm suspending my russian studies for the next three months to practice Hungarian. I'll just do basic studying until then. I'll post later with what I've studied over the week. By the way, I am going to continue to post for TAC because I'm studying Russian in the near future, and I don't think I should be penalized for something that just came up. Watching águila roja, and I read some newspapers artcles. Unfortunately, political cartoons don't make too
much sense right now, but hopefully soon they will. I signed up for Lang-8 for Spanish and Hungarian (I'll add Russian in a few months). I've reviewed a little Hungarian grammar. The language doesn't look too hard, and at least I can make use of the case systems I was learning from Russian. I'm looking for more Hungarian resources, so if anyone knows of any I would gladly appreciate it if they would post that here. Hungarian, hey? I always heard it was difficult, mostly because it's unrelated to Indo-European languages, but then again they've probably picked up at least some vocabulary from us, haven't they. Anyway, goo luck and don't feel guilty about taking a break from Russian, you have a great opportunity if you're going to Hungary and you shouldn't miss the chance to learn the language a bit before getting there!
