Weekends always seem to give me less time than weekdays to study. I did get my Assimil

Yesterday was a great day for German. I walked about 6 miles yesterday, listening to MT
the whole way. Also had my 3rd class in German 102. We're learning the Dativ there, which I already know how to use decently from self study, but am now learning the grammar rules behind, which should make it even clearer in my head. I finished the MT Foundation review as well and feel I should probably go over the last CD of the foundation series again. Some of it stuck, but based on the review disc, I'm not sure it was 80%. I'm curious how much of it shows up in the Advanced courses, as it seems like the way you learn on MT is repetition, and since it was the last CD of that course, there wasn't much time for it. I'll probably give the last CD 1 more run and then move on to Advanced. So I decided to try out cd 1 of MT Advanced instead of going back to review the last CD
of Foundation, and it seems to be the right choice. They are reviewing quite a bit of the later Foundation stuff, as well as moving on to new things which is helping me to stay interested! I also got about 15 minutes of IM time with my friend in Germany. I probably learned as much in that 15 minutes as I do in 1.5 hours of class :P Shame I can't get much more time than that per week from her. Class yesterday was a bit slow. One student didn't understand how to find the direct
and indirect objects of a sentence, which meant we spent time reviewing that again. After that we went over dative and dative prepositions. I found out the guy I was paired off with was the school's Latin teacher as well as the best German student in the class. That sort of made up for lost time in the beginning of the class as we went much faster than the rest and got about twice as much done. I also walked around 6 miles and finished up MT advanced disc 1. Mittwoch: 90 minutes of class 75 minutes of MT 22 minutes of Anki 30 minutes of Assimil Randomly listened to die Ärtze and Peter Fox throughout the day as well. I don't understand enough of what's being said to feel right counting this as anything study wise, but it's a lot of fun :P 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Weekends are becoming harder to study on than weekdays. I did get a good run on Sunday
though. I kept up with my Assimil every day, and did at least some Anki every day (catching up with all reviews on Sunday). I also got my first Die Drie ??? book in the mail and began trying to read that. I do think it's quite a bit above my head as I understood less than 40% of the first paragraph, but I spent around 40 minutes on it with a dictionary to see what I could do. Apparently the answer is read 4 paragraphs :P Still, was a lot of fun, and I'll keep picking at it to see how far I can get. I also watched a few hours of NDR online and was surprised to hear a lot more words that I knew than before. I love how easy it is to see progress so early on hehe. I think I'll start leaving off the day by day hours. I'm keeping track of everything in google docs, so I have them personally. Maybe I'll just post an overall once I hit every 100 hours. I have to admit this journal has been a huge help. Even if no one read it, I still have it to remind me that I have work to be done, and since it's my journal, it's more of a friendly reminder and not a nagging thing to dread. my family is German and I knew it from growing up and never took a grammar class until 2 years ago and I learned
more about the English language from 1 German grammar class than 12 years of English classes. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

mspen1018, I totally agree! Learning German has been a huge boost to my grammar. I
remember knowing all of this in high school, and I'm sure it's all in my head somewhere, but I haven't actively tried to use it for 15+ years. My wife has been quite sick lately so I've been doing much less time on studies (as well as everything else in life) but I have been keeping up with Anki and Assimil. Also moved over to listening to Germanpod101 and Assimil audio lessons while walking to work. My new issue I've been trying to work my way through is when to use "von" and when to use "aus". I asked my teacher and she answered with a vague "it doesn't matter which you use" type response, which I have to wonder if she just didn't want to go into it in the class. I'll look around on here once I have some free time and see if I can find any clues as to when to use which word :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
