This is a very informal poll. It's more for fun, so don't take it too seriously. A woman elsewhere on the interweb recently wrote about finding a particular language charming and romantic, and it got me thinking.

Certainly learning a language isn't the most effective or efficient way to impress the ladies. Far from it. But I'm sure it must help in some cases, even if it's only a little bit.

Obviously this is highly dependent on the individual woman. One might get weak in the knees over Italian, another might swoon over French, while another still might pine away for a man who will whisper sweet nothings to her in Klingon.

But I think that generalizations are possible. The ladies seem to have a general preference for some languages over others.

In general, what is/are the most effective language/s for impressing the ladies?

And just to make things fair, if you want to weigh in on which languages give a gentleman a stirring in his loins, feel free to share.

I enjoy hearing women speak tonal languages.

Or French will work...

You have to be darn good to impress the ladies.

Take it from one who's heard probably over a hundred guys say some nonsense in bad Swedish and expect a delighted expression of admiration.. It's quite silly.

Here's what impressed me in the past;

Some Swiss guys that I met through work who spoke fluent English, French, German and even Italian!

A Finnish guy who spoke Finnish, Swedish (good, with me), English, German and Russian. He is in politics and will probably be the prime minister of Finland one day. (Darn how could I let him go!!!)

A guy I worked with who spoke Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, German and English. Until he helped me to translated something; I took his words that it was correct but then got bombarded with angry emails from Italians. He had ommitted to warn me that he was dyslexic!

An awesome chess player / software developer I met in Israel who spoke Russian, Hebrew and English. He had strong accent in English but it was otherwise good and he was among the smartest person I have ever known. Possible next Bill Gates (or Steve Jobs, rather)

I think the guys native language is the sexiest to hear. Even if it's also my native language because then you know they can express whatever they want to express authentically. Also there's a depth to it because it's the language they've spoken from birth and therefore a part of who they are and their experience of life. Would work a similar way for a natively fluent second language since if someone has reached and maintained native fluency, the language is obviously a bit part of their life.

hahahaha I just pictured a beautiful American girl speaking fluent Mandarin or Thai hahahahaha

I can't stop laughing.

As for impressing ladies... I'd go for Italian, (Any romance language) or something pretty exotic.

I agree with you.
I once stopped dating a Spanish guy because the accent and his problems expressing himself in English irritated me (silly and I wouldn't have done it today, but that's what happened.)

Well on the guy end of it, I once told a gay friend of mine that the next girl I would date had to be bilingual, if not trilingual. He told me that he held the same standard for men, but since we both lived in a small town and there was a very limited number of "outed" gay men in the area, he told me that he had to lower the bar to get a date. For both of us, it was/is more important that our significant other spoke a second tongue, as opposed to what the tongue actually is. I figure that if I meet a girl who speaks Basque, for instance, then it might be a good reason for me to study a bit of it.

From what I always hear, girls seem to love French and Italian, as these languages are always considered to be so pleasing to the ear and romantic, for some reason. I guess some people do not understand the meaning of "romance languages." Personally, though, as an American living in a small town where most of the bilingual people speak Spanish and English, when I speak German it impresses the ladies. I am not fluent, but conversational, and the ladies tend to think I am fluent, since I can converse. They then feel that I am really smart and are impressed, although it really isn't that big of a feat.

Apart from the usual candidates (French, German, Italian etc), Japanese or Korean can impress girls when you are in Singapore. This is because we are so exposed to the cultural products from these two countries.

Russian and slavic languages can generate mixed feelings here: some girls are extraordinary delighted that I learnt Russian (due to big difference from English and all the other languages spoken here), others are quite scared that I learnt Russian and being to Russia...(negative news about Russia or cold war mindset).
